Goodwood Revival 2010

The Goodwood Revival is one of the biggest and most well known classic car meetings in the world. The reason for this is the attention to detail that is paid to every part of the revival by Lord March and his staff. The cars that race are legendary and all have stories behind them from their creation to the races they have won and lost. Cars made by Alfa Romeo, ERA, Bugatti, Ferrari, Mercedes and Jaguar and many more are the stars of the weekend. The drivers are of the highest standard and there were a fair few of them. Participating in the weekend included Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jochen Mass, John Surtees, Martin Brundle, Tony Jardine Adrian Newey, Anthony Reid, Martin Stretton, Tom Kristensen and Bobby Rahal. This year Goodwood paid tribute to the career of John Surtees and BRM racing cars. John Surtees led a collection of his cars in a parade around the track. A parade was also given for the BRM cars. The people dress in period fashion. I attended the revival in 2010 in the company of my dad Bern, my brother J and my brothers father in law Robi and we were treated to some amazing wheel to wheel racing over the three day weekend.
Goodwood also has a motorbike race called the Barry Sheen Memorial Trophy, this is ridden over two races and the winner is decided by the aggregate. The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation saw an amazing display of pre 1966 aircraft, a winner is selected by a panel of celebrity judges that included Rowan Atkinson, Nick Mason, James Martin and Bruce Dickinson. This years winner was the only remaining airworthy Hawker Demon from 1937. We also saw the Battle of Britain Memorial flight by the RAF as Goodwood used to be RAF Westhampnett prior to 1948.
As well as the racing there are hundreds of trade stands and food vendors to keep you occupied. 2010 was the first year that Tesco's appeared in a 1960's guise. There is also a circus, a fun fair and American style wrestling to keep the family entertained. Bonhams were selling some very nice cars and watches if you have the budget.
Below are some photos taken by me and J, as well as some film footage.
